On the beautiful Lebeau / Whiteville LA grounds the Acadiana Fall 2008 Trial started the day with fog rising from the well groomed grounds and technical ponds. Most contestants gathered waiting for the open to begin their opening series which looked to be a wide open triple with a layout blind left long retired bird. Tough marks and variable winds made the success rate of most early dogs very low. Better success came in the afternoon with better lighting and winds. Judges Dick Kaised and Wendell Williams called back 29 dogs to the land blind which began Saturday a.m. Callbacks were dogs #’s: 2, 3, 9,10, 14-21, 23, 24, 28, 30, 32, 35, 38, 41, 44, 46, 47, 50, 51, 53, 55, 56, 57
Other contestants tried their luck at the Qualifying stake where a double mark setup with a long retired and a land blind behind the flyer took its toll. Eight dogs survived the series and attempted the water blind with success to be invited back to the final water series. Judges John Caire and Austin Channell setup up a challenging triple with two marks on water and a right go bird on land. After the birds fell, placements were passed out as follows:Â
Jams to Seaside’s Bullwinkle, Owner Patrick Herbert, Wolf River’s Duramax, Owner Joe Broyles, Wave the Flag, Owner Patrick Huckabay
Saturday’s action heated up quickly with the 12 dog derby judged by John Caire and Austin Channell, qualifying judges from the previous day. The second series even contained the same set of double marks thrown the day before in the Qual except without the long gun retiring. Contestants all agreed that it was a very challenging derby. Only four dogs finished all series with the top dog as Lanes Lets Get Ready to Rumble (Ali) ownedy by Bobby Lane out of FC-AFC Dare to Dream and FC Gemstone’s “The Raven”. This win gives Ali 25 total derby points now. Second place went to Bell’s Backwater Boondock (Boone) owned by Ben Wisenbaker. Third place to Reservoir’s Pendant’s Gem (Gem) owned and handled by Rickey Edge, and Fourth place going to Phyllo Farms Lil’ Bit of Mischief (Lillabet) owned by John Skibber.Â
Amateur handlers began their marking tests on the Washington, LA, property which contained very challenging terrain. Faced with very tough triple markings using the terrain to test most dogs marking memory very well. The two long guns retired, and due to the tightness and distance (rumored to be 420 and 235 yards) success rates were very low early in the day and most dogs continued to have problems with the two long marks throughout the day. 28 contestants were called back to a dry pop land blind with an old homestead as the backdrop. Callbacks to the water blind on Sunday are: 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 14, 16, 19, 24, 26, 27, 32, 33, 35, 36, 41, 42, 47, 48, 50.
Sunday’s action began  with 16 of 21 Amateur dogs completing the water blind and being invited to the final series marks. Judges Ed Fullerton and Steve Helgoth set up a tough triple with two retired guns. The long gun on the left at approx. 350 yards and across the very left corner of the pond went off first, followed by a middle distance bird thrown in line with a channel of the pond also retired, and to the right a short flyer station released a very enticing bird which was shot and landed in the water approximately 75 yards from the line. An honor was also included. Only six Amateur dogs completed this series successfully and one jam was given to Jim Byrd handling his dog Cosmo’s Raft Creek Storm. First place went to Lee Jolley with FC-AFC Jolie Catin which gives her now 106.5 All Age points. Second place going to Rick Wedel with Dominator’s High Spade and Third to Oakley’s Blackness owned by Luke Barras. Fourth place went to Joe Broyles with Marsh Prairie Quick Pick and Reserve Jam to Miles’ Hank the Duck Dog owned by Chilton Miles.
Open dogs completed their land and water blind with the following dogs invited to the final series beginning Sunday morning: 2, 3, 9, 16, 19, 20, 21, 24, 30, 47, 50, 51, 56, 57. 15 dogs lasting to the final series and 11 of those came away with a ribbon. Green Jams went to: Watermark Bud owned by Raymond Mouton, Eagle Rumor Has It owned by Steve Robben, Malk’s Fishing Frenzy owned by Kyle Broussard, Rocket Man to the Moon owned by Ryan Brasseaux/Tom Watson, Coolwater’s Blew by You owned by Gene and Andrea Horner, FC Gemstone’s The Raven owned by Gwen Jones. First place went to AFC Bayou Teche Miah owned and handled by Stephen Ritter which gives them their FC and qualifies them for both National Open and the National Amateur. Miah now has a total of 25 All Age points. Second place went to Landover Goldendaze Yukon owned by Chuck and Mary Jane Schweikert and handled by Scott Dewey. Third place FC-AFC Greenheads Superphlash Dude owned and handled by Rick Wedel. Bringin in Fourth place again, FC-AFC Marsh Prairie Quick Pick owned and handled by Joe and Tal Broyles and Reserve Jam to Indian Creeks Excaliber owned by Joe Lane and handled by Scott Dewey.
